“It cannot be found on any map…true places never are.”
—Herman Melville, Moby Dick
In a decentralized society, creating a sense of place has never been more important. Yet another sense of place resides deep within each individual that searches for meaning and resonance in the world.
Artists search the visual and audible planes for new territory…for place. The artists here have all in one way or another dealt with finding or documenting a sense of place in the world, where the intersections of life and longing meet.
Whether through the geography of architecture, religious faith, relationships or in community this search seeks resonance both within and without in a search for that exhilarating sense of belonging and self that comes from being at home in the world.
Our sense of well-being, belonging, history and meaning create place both real and memorized. Many long for a past where this sense of place was common. Artists do more than document life and examine where we have been, they also can show us our way.
Placemaking is always sacred work, whether in the public square, in our collective and personal identity or in our dreams. Place is both visceral and fleeting, a dream yet a real locale. A sense of place is within all seeking to find home.
A sense of place was first exhibited at Art Fair International/Santa Monica in October 2006. An expanded version was exhibited at DMOA April 2007-December 2007. The Drawing Room exhibit is a permanent collection exhibit.
